It feels less like two halves of one game and more like playing two separate Last of Us sequels, as Abby's story slowly builds from an aimless few opening hours(not unlike Ellie's narrative) before snapping into place with some great new characters and environments not even glimpsed in Ellie's game. Suddenly, you're playing as Abby, killer of Joel and antagonist of the game up until now. It builds to a big climax and then.the game resets itself. For the first 10 hours or so, the narrative follows Ellie on an increasingly bleak path as she singlemindly pursues Abby and all her friends. The biggest change to the Last of Us Part II is its structure. I'd argue just as many important story moments happen "in-game" on the controller as they do in a non-interactive cutscene, which makes the whole experience more seamless.
Throughout it all, the narrative is threaded with lots of fluid character interactions. One minute you're sneaking through an old cruise ship filled with zombies, the next you're in a flashback about a cherished childhood memory between Ellie and Joel. The high moments of combat and set pieces are offset by a variety of slower beats with environmental traversal, exploring for much needed supplies or just unique sequences.

Its a harsh, kill-or-be-killed world, and at least on Hard difficulty, you feel more like you survived by the skin of your teeth instead of an superheroic power fantasy. Guns feel weighty and powerful, and when you smack a hammer into somebody's skull, it FEELS like it fuckin' hurts. There's a flying by the-seat-of-your pants feeling to a lot of the larger battles, as resources are scarce and the player just has to make shit up as they go along. Combat arenas are larger, with a few more mobility/movement options available to the player, but its still the same mix of tense stealth leading to scrappy, improv heavy fights.

Like TLOU1, Part II is very much a super slick crowdpleasing zombie movie thriller. And so Ellie and her girlfriend Dina set off a quest of righteous justice in the rainy, destroyed remains of Seattle.
